The Fool’s Thread ~ Tarot Spread: The Fool's Craft

I designed the Fool's Craft Tarot Spread to help me connect with the fool archetype and explore how this energy moves through my creative life and I am honored to share it with you here.

The Fool is the spark of inspiration before the first stitch is made—the curious whisper urging us toward a new beginning. The Fool doesn’t pause to question their skill or readiness; they trust the path will unfold beneath their feet. In this post, we’ll explore a tarot spread designed to deepen your relationship with The Fool and offer insight into how this archetype moves through your craft. Whether you’re just beginning or beginning again, this spread invites you to reflect with intention. If you’re just joining us, you may want to start with the first post in the series, The Fool in Fiber Arts, or explore the second, The Gifts and Shadows of the Fool.

The Major Arcana & Craft

The Tarot is traditionally divided into two parts: the Major and Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana, made up of four suits and their court cards, speaks to the mundane: our daily rhythms, the ordinary moments and small choices that carry great weight. While the word mundane might sound plain, don’t be fooled—there’s powerful magic in the hands-on, day-to-day flow of our lives and craft.

The Major Arcana, on the other hand, invites us into the mythic. These 21 cards, plus The Fool, chart the path of transformation. They mark the big shifts, soul lessons, and invitations that guide us toward deeper authenticity. The Fool, often unnumbered or labeled 0, is the traveler on this journey. Some place The Fool Card at the start of the sequence when laying all the cards out in order. Others place the Fool at the end. However, both are true placements because the Fool moves in a circle, or more accurately, a spiral, ever beginning, ever becoming.

Where the Minor Arcana reflects the stitches of everyday life, the Major Arcana maps the broader tapestry: the patterns of growth, change, and self-discovery we encounter as we create our way through the world.

Tarot Spread: The Fool's Craft

The Fool stands at the beginning of every creative journey, embodying trust, curiosity, and the willingness to leap after an inspiration. Use this spread when you need to invoke the qualities of the Fool or to explore your craft deeper through the Fool's lens.

In this spread, we separate The Fool card and place it face up, allowing its energy to influence the reading. Then, we draw three cards to illuminate our path forward.

  1. The Spark – What inspiration or opportunity is calling to me? This card reveals the idea, technique, or project that is asking to be explored. It may be something new or an old dream resurfacing, ready to be pursued. If you are aware of The Spark already, this card provides deeper insight into the inspiration or opportunity.

  2. The Knapsack – What skills, experiences, or lessons do I already carry? Just as The Fool’s bundle holds the wisdom of past journeys, this card reminds us of the strengths we bring with us. Even if the path ahead feels uncertain, we are never truly starting from nothing.

  3. The Leap – How can I embrace the unknown and move forward? This card offers guidance on taking the first step—how to begin with trust, how to quiet doubt, or how to surrender to the joy of the process. It reminds us that progress is made by moving, not by standing at the edge of possibility.

Lay these cards before you, with The Fool presiding over them, and let the story of your creative journey unfold. The Fool is always ready to travel, you need only follow.

When to Use The Fool's Craft Tarot Spread

You can return to this spread any time you're seeking to explore the energy of the Fool in relation to your creative life. It’s especially helpful at the start of a new project—when the path ahead is open, and you’re ready to take that brave first step. It’s also a gentle companion when you’ve lost your crafting spark (what crocheters lovingly call “crojo”). I'm currently using it before casting on a new project, inviting the spread to illuminate aspects of the upcoming project that may need more of my attention and to direct my creative energy. Let it guide you back to play, curiosity, and the next project that will just feel right in your hands and heart.
